Satya Nadella, the current CEO of Microsoft, has spoken about the company’s decision to abandon smartphones running on the Windows Phone system. According to his words, it was a significant mistake by the Redmond giant.
Many smartphone users fondly remember the mobile devices that used the Windows Phone system. A large group of former owners of such devices believes that the project and its functionality far exceeded the competition.
Nadella addressed this decision in an interview with Business Insider, stating that exiting the smartphone segment was one of the toughest decisions he made during his tenure as CEO, which began in 2014. At the same time, he notes, “In hindsight, I wish we hadn’t done that. Perhaps we would have found a way to make it work, and we might have rediscovered categories like PCs, tablets, and phones.”
It’s worth mentioning that former Microsoft CEOs share a similar opinion about this decision. The co-founder of the company, Bill Gates, stated that the failure in the battle with Android was the “biggest mistake in history,” and Steve Ballmer expresses similar sentiments.
